THE GOAL: SEND A BEER INTO SPACE.

Under the tagline of “Normal is weird”, Flying Monkeys Brewery is known for brewing unconventional craft beer. The independent craft brewery based in Barrie, Ontario has found their niche creating award-winning beers, and it was while enjoying the fruits of their labour that the company had an idea: “Let’s send a beer into space!”. They naturally asked Tyger Shark to help; we said, “Hell Ya!”. The rest is history.

ONE GIANT LEAP FOR BEER-KIND.

At 5:36 pm on Thursday, June 4, 2015, the Flying Monkeys Brewery teamed up with us to launch Operation SuperCollider, a home-brewed mission to send a bottle of beer through the stratosphere and into space.

On a homemade platform with three GoPro cameras, back-up battery packs, an altimeter, recovery beacon and our well wishes, we lifted-off from the rooftop of their brewhouse, launching the Flying Monkeys into Craft Beer History.

How We Completed The Mission.

Once Tyger Shark determined that the Flying Monkeys crew weren’t, in fact, kidding when they asked us to help them send a beer to space, we both brought together our best teams of techies to get to work building the launch platform.

After a few days of research and some snap decisions, we rigged up a spacecraft of wood and plexiglass that was carefully fitted with some state-of-the-art technology for tracking and recording the space action. We brought all of our best storytelling tools to the table that included photography, videography, drones and dash of craziness to make this tiny miracle happen.

All of the incredible footage we captured from the build, launch and journey home was brought to life to tell a story much bigger than a beer. It became a story of teamwork and having fun doing what you do.
